It's honestly far better than I thought with realistic faces. Yeah some look like 3D renders, but others.. I could totally scroll past them without noticing anything. Even the ones that look like renders could be labeled selfies with a little too much filters on them. Impressive

u/hglman 5d ago

no5 is an extremely realistic image.

10

u/Apollo24_ 2024 5d ago

Yup. Her skin doesn't look quite natural, but that's something I'd expect seing on intagram.

Rule 34 is going to be hyper-accelerated

36

u/No-Transition-6630 5d ago

Don't forget Rule 63, custom art for ships is about to get crazy.

2

u/FrugalityPays 5d ago

for ships?

13

u/Strange_Vagrant 5d ago

When fans fawn over am actual or desired relation-ship between two characters from the movie/show/book/whatever, they "ship" that couple.

I want Jim and Micheal from the office to be a thing, so I write fan fiction, draw pictures, or render ai images... I'm shipping them. Just an example.

10

u/FrugalityPays 5d ago

Thanks, how do I un-know something?

2

u/BigPapaUsagi 5d ago

As Strange_Vagrant said to "ship" a couple. Ship coming from "relationship".

30

u/AntiSocial_Vigilante 5d ago

Ah yes the age of singularity starts with generating porn using ai.

9

u/xjames55 5d ago

one can hope

u/CSharpSauce 5d ago

^ This guy has a niche fetish

u/imnos 5d ago

Rule 34? Where is that from?

14

u/Mrtnxzylpck 5d ago

Don't ask you don't wanna know

5

u/imnos 5d ago

Ah, yes I've heard of this... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rule_34

Imagine the possibilities....

How long do I need to be on this waitlist typically? It’s been months

39

u/Gaothaire 5d ago

If you're not an artist / AI researcher / social media personality in the field, you can expect to be waiting for a while. They prioritize people who can give them exposure

17

u/darthdiablo All aboard the Singularity train! 5d ago

They prioritize people who can give them exposure

That's kinda hilarious.

  • They prioritize people who can give them exposure

  • "Regular" folks learn of DALL-E from those "prioritized" people

  • Signs up on waitlist, but Google isn't going to give access to those "regular folks" just yet. Because, priority should be given to folks (artist, AI researcher, social media personality, etc) to keep touting DALL-E to the "regular" folks who can't move up on waiting lists in the first place.

3

u/insectula 5d ago

Actually, I got mine about two weeks ago and I'm no one special.

2

u/darthdiablo All aboard the Singularity train! 5d ago

Yeah that’s odd. Signed up mid-April, I’m also nobody special.

2

u/ddddbbbb999 5d ago

You’re special

1

u/Charuru 5d ago

Probably because "give them exposure" is wrong, they're probably prioritizing people who can give them useful feedback.

1

u/grokmachine 5d ago

Isn't OpenAI a nonprofit? I know Microsoft has some exclusive deals with them, but I thought it was run by an independent foundation.

12

u/Cultasare 5d ago

Thanks for the reply. I think once they open it up more widely we will see amazing things because we're tapping into creativty of people who may not have taken an artistic path in life but have lots of ideas they will get to see come to life

1

u/jbrass7921 5d ago

On occasion throughout the years I’ve wished I could send someone a mental picture. Emoji’s and later stock pictures and gifs were good. Being able to speak a picture that doesn’t exist already into existence and send it to a friend is going to be great.

2

u/colbycalistenson 5d ago

Does "a while" here mean hours? Days? Weeks? Months? Years?

1

u/Gaothaire 5d ago

I don't actually know, as I also haven't heard back from them 😬 probably months at least

2

u/colbycalistenson 5d ago

Thanks for the info!

-2

u/Crypt0n0ob 5d ago

How “open” of them… Open AI my ass.

1

u/Pstar_Jackson 5d ago

I actually got it in a month and i didn't even filled any social media links

1

u/darthdiablo All aboard the Singularity train! 5d ago

When did you get on the waitlist?

1

u/Pstar_Jackson 5d ago

Applied on 13 may got it on 18 june

2

u/kevinlivin 5d ago

I also got on in April, but no confirmation yet...I even do work in AI

1

u/darthdiablo All aboard the Singularity train! 5d ago

Huh. I got on waitlist April, still have that confirmation email dated April. Are you perhaps an artist or AI researcher?

1

u/Pstar_Jackson 5d ago

No im not, i selected the "other'"option, guess i got lucky

17

u/Pro_RazE 6d ago

This is mind blowing 🤯

17

u/Meekman 5d ago

And years later, we probably will be able to create a whole movie with just A.I. characters. Input a screenplay, have it perform the parts.

Probably won't be until the 2040s, but with exponential growth, it could be here sooner than we think.

16

u/MayoMark 5d ago

Fred Astaire is going to be dancing with so many Hoover vacuum cleaners.

2

u/Necessary_Ad_9800 1d ago

I thinks it’s just 5-8 years from now if not sooner

2

u/AlexTweaks 5d ago

research doesn't neccesarily grow exponentially, the AI industry hit walls for 20 years.

2

u/newoldcolumbus 5d ago

Could it also be they didn't have the hardware?

1

u/AlexTweaks 5d ago

Then what's to say we won't have to wait another 20 years before things we come up with today are viable.

As the we learn more the problems we try to solve they also become more complex at what rate either of those will occur is hard to say.

0

u/the1ine 4d ago

Show your working.

2040 Exponential

Where are you pulling these from?

14

u/crablegs_aus 5d ago

I’m not interested in this tech until I can render my own custom porn with 98% accuracy.

35

u/px403 5d ago

That's hilarious that for months everyone was like "lol Dall-E sucks at faces, this AI is dumb" when really it was an intentionally placed limitation.

To me this feels like deception. They're hiding a ton of capabilities so the general public gets a warped idea of what this technology can really do.

24

u/Silicon-Dreamer Abolish Anti-intellectualism, Make Utopia 5d ago

I'm sorry but when they literally publicly said on their main page,

We also used advanced techniques to prevent photorealistic generations of real individuals’ faces

Hard to see how it's "deception".

3

u/px403 5d ago

Does "Dall-E" have a "main page"?

I'm not seeing it here: https://openai.com/blog/dall-e/, and I don't see that on OpenAI's main site or anything either. Is this something that you need an invite to be able to see? I'm pretty sure 99+% of people who are experiencing Dall-E images don't even know what OpenAI is. That disclaimer has about zero chance of being read by the general public, which is the group that I'm worried about here.

3

u/Silicon-Dreamer Abolish Anti-intellectualism, Make Utopia 5d ago

Admittedly your point about it likely not being read is much more understandable yeah. The result I get from looking up "dalle 2" is this link, talks about what it doesn't generate down below.

6

u/HadesBBC 5d ago

This is going faster than we think, in a few years we'll.see crazy sjit

3

u/the1ine 4d ago

Your ignorance isn't always someone else's deception. What do they have to gain from this conspiracy theory?

0

u/Wiskkey 5d ago

I've been telling people for months that DALL-E 2 can generate photorealistic faces, but that OpenAI also employed technical measures to try to prevent too close of a likeness to photorealistic faces in the training dataset. Source.

7

u/EvilSporkOfDeath 5d ago

So am I reading it correctly that they've intentionally made it unusable to generate images of famous people. I totally get why they would do that, but it sure does take some of the fun out of it. Seems like it'll only be a matter of time until some other company makes something like this without imposing those restrictions.

On another note, wheres the porn? Are there artificial restrictions on that too? Let's be real, lots and lots of people are going to want to use it for explicit imagery, so why havent we seen any yet?

5

u/brick_eater 5d ago

I think there are restrictions on porn like content, yes. I don’t know how it works though

19

u/oddonebetween 6d ago

The last 2 really give off Uncanny Valley vibes.

5

u/Alugere 5d ago

I'd say the last one looks like your typical instagram manipulated influencer pic. With a gold tinfoil tiara.

2

u/SirDidymus 6d ago

Look at the symmetry in the mouth. It’s off in a disturbing fashion…

4

u/Johns-schlong 5d ago

The pupils are terrible as well.

1

u/w-alien 5d ago

Her upper lip goes behind the lower lip. Also her eye sizes are off

0

u/SweetPapay 5d ago

Yes buaahhhhh

1

u/ToastedUranium 4d ago

For me, they’re so realistic that they’re past the uncanny valley. I don’t feel creeped out by them.

-2

u/hglman 5d ago

What about 5?

1

u/oddonebetween 5d ago

I don't see it so much. One of her eyes is a little droopy, but the last 2 have this piercing stare that's just unsettling.

17

u/MidnightSun_55 6d ago

If I held that model I would release it fully, unconstrained and let hell loose lol, to see how far people will go... way more interesting that way.

38

u/Innov4 6d ago

They've spent tens of millions of dollars on it. They don't care what is interesting, only what is profitable. You can bet that DALL-E will be released on a subscription or credit-based model soon enough. I'll certainly be signing up.

0

u/Seek_Treasure 6d ago

OpenAI is a non profit

28

u/pwrstrug 6d ago

OpenAI is an artificial intelligence (AI) research laboratory consisting of the for-profit corporation OpenAI LP and its parent company, the non-profit OpenAI Inc.

I don't know enough about how business works to know how a for-profit can run under a non-profit.

3

u/userbrn1 5d ago

lmao... i am confused as well

3

u/pwrstrug 5d ago

I imagine the parent company OpenAI Inc is the company that oversees the entire project, they are the brains, and they have the free versions that are open-source and helpful to various industry communities and have led to things like Dall-E mini, but then there is also OpenAI LP which is the business arm that they use to license out to businesses and paid projects -- advertisements and stuff.

But that's purely a guess.

8

u/Silent002 5d ago

Aside from what others have mentioned, "non-profit" doesn't mean "we work on this for free", it means there's no stakeholder making money off of the work done. If the non-profit's outgoings are expected to be $x, that means the money they have to make in order to afford those outgoings is also approx. $x, with anything earned above that going back into the company for future reinvestment, rather than being paid as bonus / dividends etc. to stakeholders.

3

u/Seek_Treasure 5d ago

That's right. The point is usually non profit organisations don't have the goal of maximizing profits, even if some of them have to sustain themselves (not always). OpenAI has "investors" (or sponsors?) which are probably interested in outcome in form of technologies and solutions for problems, rather than money. Which, of course doesn't mean they can't spin off a for profit org as soon as good profit opportunity comes.

9

u/Innov4 6d ago

"OpenAI is an artificial intelligence research laboratory consisting of the for-profit corporation OpenAI LP and its parent company, the non-profit OpenAI Inc."

5

u/Versck 5d ago

A common misconception is that a non-profit doesn't strive to make profits. The real difference is where the profits go and how they justify their need to make more money. Going to shareholders vs growing the company/inflating salaries. A key example of the issues with this distinction is that there are non-profit investment firms. A business you could say has the sole purpose of making a profit.

3

u/EbolaFred 5d ago

Even nationally-recognized do-good non-profits have leadership earning well into six figures, which can shock some people.

"How can they say they are non-profit?!?" Well, if your organization is responsible for collecting and distributing billions of dollars in donations every year, you'd better have some smart and corruption-resistant C-suite-level talent at the top and pay them accordingly.

6

u/adt 6d ago

Nope

2

u/azriel777 5d ago

There should be no restrictions in the coding itself, instead just say they can create anything they want, but there are some things which go against their policy or flat out illegal and if it is shared online, they can be banned. Have a way to report content that has been shared online and breaks the policy, all they have to do is reverse image to find it and they can ban the account.

2

u/KickUp-HammyDude 5d ago

Now I want to get on Dall E 2 more than ever…

Unless there’s an alternative with prompts including human faces…

4

u/16161as 5d ago

Soon they might seem more 'human' than sapiens lol

1

u/Bierculles 5d ago

That robit "girl" makes me deeply uncomfortable

8

u/drunkandpassedout 5d ago

She is programmed for pleasure, is something wrong?

1

u/WhoTouchedSasha777 5d ago

Looks creepy to me for some reason.

1

u/jnorly123 5d ago

I was expecting something on the level of that thispersondoesnotexist website

1

u/Dustangelms 5d ago

When it will be able to generate cat pictures? I could subscribe to that.

1

u/Peripatitis 5d ago

In the future will we have unrestricted AI or will it be made illegal?

1

u/420BigDawg_ 5d ago

At this rate I could probably put in my story I am working on and see it turned into a movie in the future. This is gonna be so cool

1

u/Wisdom_Pen 5d ago

Are there any links to version of it?

1

u/Zealousideal-Skill84 5d ago

.. is this safe ?? What ate the implications of this lifted restriction?

-19

u/Black_RL 6d ago

Not bad, but too much anime and porn influence.

21

u/draculamilktoast 5d ago

Ah yes, Bob Ross the world-famous pornographer.

10

u/Shamwowz21 5d ago

There’s literally nothing sexual. They are attractive; is that the issue?

-6

u/SmallpoxTurtleFred 5d ago

This issue is that you can have it make an image of joe Biden in an orgy with the Dallas cowboy cheerleaders or whatever and use it for propaganda.

1

u/TupewDeZew 2d ago

That would be funny

4

u/HadesBBC 5d ago

Lol gtfoh
